Goblin Mode

In today’s relentless world of self optimization, filtered aesthetics, and #GirlBoss energy, an odd phrase has clawed its way to the top of the internet landscape: goblin mode. It’s raw, chaotic, and unapologetic – and millions of people are here for it. But, what is goblin mode, and why are people not only accepting it but celebrating it?

Let’s plunge deep into this curious world of goblin mode – a place of comfort, of shattering expectations, and – let’s be honest – where humanity gets a little bit more… feral.

What is Goblin Mode?

Goblin mode is an internet slang term describing a sort of behavior that is shameless, sloppy, lazy, greedy, self-indulgent, and wants nothing to do with moral, societal or industrious pressures. It means waking up at noon, wearing pajamas all day, binge eating snacks in bed , doomscrolling for hours on end- etc., and not giving a hoot what others think.

The term began to gain traction in meme culture around 2009, but finally caught fire in 2022 when it started to go viral on social media platforms like TikTok, Twitter, and Reddit. Much of this gained mainstream legitimacy and attention when Oxford Dictionaries declared goblin mode its 2022 Word of the Year, indicating a drastic shift in a shared mindset for people post-pandemic.

Goblin mode is the antithesis of curated perfection as shown through its somewhat refined relative “cottagecore” or the grindset mentality promoted by hustle culture, and is instead about embracing your weird unfiltered self, no apologies, no aesthetic or filters.

What Exactly Does “Goblin Mode” Mean?

Goblin mode is about shedding the pressure of performance. Goblin mode embraces comfort above appearance, indulgence above restraint, and real above fake. You can think of being goblin mode as the opposite of being “that girl,” (i.e. the girl who wakes up at 5 AM, meditates, journals, drinks green juice, has a 10-step skincare routine etc.)

Here are examples of what going goblin mode could look like:

  • Eating peanut butter straight from the jar at 2 AM.
  • Watching Netflix for six hours without moving from your blanket cocoon.
  • Wearing mismatched socks and not caring.
  • Living in what some people would consider “organized chaos.”

However, goblin mode represents more than laziness. It’s a rebellion. An act of revolt against productivity and productivity shaming, against beauty standards, and against the exhausting pursuit of continual self-improvement.

Where Did Goblin Mode Come From?

The phrase “goblin mode” was first tweeted in a funny manner years ago, but with the growing mask of hustle culture, the phrase got made popular. It went viral in 2022 with a fake headline jokingly referencing the term with actress Julia Fox, which sparked interest. Even after Fox stated she had never used the term, the meme had already gone “goblin mode” and people connected with it.

Social media, pop culture blogs, and Reddit threads were flooded with the phrase — with people saying things like:

  • “It’s goblin mode hours, don’t text me.”
  • “My weekend plans: pure goblin mode.”
  • “Finally going goblin mode after pretending to have my life together for 4 days.”

People really connected with it. After years of year lockdowns, political anxiety, economic angst, and mental fatigue, people were done pretending to be a polished version of themselves. They just wanted to be.

Why People Like Goblin Mode?

So why is goblin mode weirdly empowering and widely embraced?

  1. It’s funny and unfiltered – Let’s be real, saying “I’m going goblin mode” is funny. It’s funny and sort of liberating to joke about your chaotic behaviour by describing it as a mythical creature.
  2. A rejection of perfection – In a world of IG aesthetics and daily hustle reels, goblin mode feels like relief. People are sick of pretending to be happy and living their perfect life. Goblin mode is real, it’s messy, and it’s human.
  3. Mental Health Awareness – People are beginning to realize the costs of burnout and perpetual productivity. Goblin mode is often deemed a funny, albeit valid, method of self-care. It creates space to not be okay for a minute.
  4. Rejecting the Rat Race – Goblin mode is the ultimate rebuke of capitalism and hustle culture. It deserves to be embraced for the pure enjoyment of doing nothing productive, guilt-free!
  5. Living With Less Stakes – What I truly love about goblin mode is it championing the idea that not everything and every experience needs to be turned into money, posted, or monetized in some way. Sometimes we can just exist!

How to Go Goblin Mode?

Feeling inspired? Take your goblin-ness with you and let’s get to work!

  • Dress for the mess: From oversized hoodies, and fluffy socks to no bra.
  • Snack like a goblin: Eat whatever you want whenever you want — no shame!
  • Ignore the algorithm: Don’t post. Don’t filter. Don’t mindlessly scroll (unless you choose too!).
  • Do what feels good, not what’s looked like.
  • Take breaks from “on” time. You’re allowed to disengage, go ahead and comfortably disappear!

Just remember — goblin mode is about you. Not what TikTok said or should be!

How Do I Stop My Husband from Going Goblin Mode?

This inquiry (which I’ve recently seen pop up in search result lists) highlights a lighthearted but common relationship issue. If your partner is going full goblin – never leaving the couch, surrounded by wrappers, and gaming for 10 hours a day – it might be time to do a little gentle check-in.

However, just remember this: goblin mode isn’t necessarily bad. Sometimes people need an unstructured phase of rest. It’s about balancing. Communicate, share duties, and find ways to be supportive without a lot of judgment.

Is Goblin Mode Healthy?

Like anything else, moderation is important.

  • Healthy Goblin Mode: One weekend of messy joy, guilt-free rest, and personal comfort.
  • Unhealthy Goblin Mode: Weeks of being completely isolated, neglect of basic hygiene, and/or neglect of responsibilities.

If goblin mode becomes a lifestyle that is detrimental to your relationships, health, or goals – perhaps it’s time to recalibrate. But if it’s a flavor of decompression, humor, or protest against pressure, it can be detoxifying.

What is Goblin Mode Dating?

Interestingly, “goblin mode” has made its way into dating too. Goblin mode dating is when people stop being cool, mysterious or perfect – and just choose to show up as their weird real selves.

It’s:

  • Eating takeout on the first date in your sweatpants.
  • Sharing embarrassing Spotify playlists.
  • Being okay with TMI.

It’s authentic. It’s messy. And oddly enough, it’s helping people connect more honestly.

What Does the Goblin Mode Meme Say About Us?

The trend of goblin mode, I mean, just look at all the TikTok is not just funny, it is social commentary, capturing a collective feeling of rejecting the curation, the impressing, the grinding. We are collectively claiming, and our maligned sloppiness is saying, “I have a right to be loved when I am a goblin.”

Conclusion: Why We All Need a Little Goblin Mode?

Goblin mode is a reset for culture. We may not be staying in goblin mode forever, nor abandoning our goals of personal growth, but we allow imperfection to permeate our lives, we say “no” to the pressure and “yes” to pajamas, we embrace comfort in the chaos.
In a world that demands you be a “brand,” goblin mode gives you room to be human and sometimes that’s self-love in its most radical form.

So, next time someone asks you, what the hell is goblin mode?, you can say proudly,
“It’s me, in my blanket burrito, binging rich people falling in love on reality tv, eating cereal out of a mug and I am so content at this moment.”
