The Solomon Islands, located in the South Pacific Ocean (Southeastern corner of the Pacific), is a remarkable country comprising over 900 islands (many of which are not traversed.) The Solomon Islands is a country of incredible natural scenery, historical depth and interesting native cultures that is not always recognized or appreciated.

1. It’s an Archipelago of More than 900 islands

The Solomon Islands consists of six major islands and 900 smaller ones, all located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Of these islands, only about 350 are inhabited, which leaves a large portion of the islands untouched.

2. It’s a Country and a part of an archipelago

“Solomon Islands” refers to an independent country, whereas “Solomon Islands archipelago” refers to the archipelago that consists of Bougainville Island which is politically a part of Papua New Guinea.

3. Over 70 indigenous languages are spoken

The Solomon Islands is one of the most linguistically diverse places in the world! There’s 70+ indigenous languages, with English being recognized as the official language of the Solomon Islands. Solomon Islands Pijin is mainly spoken and recognized by Solomon Islanders as a creole language.

4. It Was Important in World War II

The islands were the site of an important battlefield in World War II, in particular, the famous Battle of Guadalcanal (1942–43). Evidence of the remnants of war can still be found on the islands today, including ruined ships, wrecked aircraft, and other remnants of old weapons.

5. It is a Diver’s Paradise

With crystal clear water, beautiful coral reefs, and WWII wrecks, the Solomon Islands is regarded as one of the best diving locations in the world. There are multiple diving spots like Iron Bottom Sound that attract divers from around the world.

6. It Has Active Volcanoes

The country is along the Pacific Rim of Fire, which means it is situated in a location with common climatic issues with volcanoes. An island inside the Solomons called Tinakula is an active volcanic island where you will regularly see plumes of smoke and ash appearing. Earthquakes and tremors also happen and are a part of everyday life here.

7. Its Rainforests Are Biodiverse

The unique species of birds, insects, and plants reflect an amazing degree of biodiversity in the Solomon Islands that is not found anywhere else in the world. There are already more than 230 types of orchids blooming in the country, along with many endemic animals.

8. Traditional Culture Is Important

Despite modernity and modernization, culture and customs are an important aspect of daily life. Villages and tribes carry on their kastom (customary law and traditions) in authentic ceremonial events featuring music, dance and storytelling.

9. The Currency is Solomon Islands Dollar (SBD)

The currency used in the Solomon Islands is the Solomon Islands Dollar (SBD). The economy is predominantly concerned with natural resources such as timber, fish, and palm oil. Tourism and mining have now started to expand.

10. It’s A Bit off the Beaten Path – In the Best Way

Visiting the Solomon Islands is undoubtedly not going to be overcrowded with tourists. This makes it an ideal destination for travelers wanting a genuine, serene experience. There truly are many places to go in the solomons that are remote, to the point that there is sometimes not even any internet or cell service – a great opportunity to truly disconnect.
