Method 1: Change Background Color for Text Story

  • Open Instagram and swipe right to open up the Story camera.
  • Tap “Aa” (Create mode) for a text story.
  • Type in your message.
  • Tap the color wheel icon (top right or bottom, depending on your device).
  • Swipe through that color wheel until you find a background color that you like.
  • Tap “Your Story” or “Close Friends” to share.

Method 2: Change Background Color for a Repost of a Feed Post

If you share (or reshare) someone’s post (or your own) to your story, Instagram will default a background color. Here’s how to change it:

  • Click on the paper plane icon below a post and select “Add post to your story.”
  • Once you see the image in your story screen, click the draw (squiggle) tool in the top menu.
  • Select a color in the palette at the bottom.
  • Tap and hold down on the screen (not on the post) for 1-2 seconds.
  • The background will fill with the color.”
  • Then click “Done,” and reposition your post if necessary.

Caution: You cannot do it this way if the post is a video or reel, this is function for static image post only.

Method 3: Applying a Solid Background Behind a Photo

Do you want to cover the background behind a sticker, GIF, or cut-out image?

  • Start a story with any image and.
  • Tap the Draw tool (squiggle).
  • Select a color.
  • Press and hold down on the screen to apply a full-screen solid color.
  • Now Click the sticker icon to re-add your photo as a sticker (you can also use the “camera roll” sticker or cut-out feature here).
  • Resize and reposition as desired .

Bonus Tip: Use the Eyedropper tool.

Do you want the background to match another color from your photo or logo?

  • Click the draw tool.
  • Click the Eyedropper icon.
  • Now click any area on your photo to pick that color.
  • Then press and hold the screen to fill the background with it!
